I have often heard people call it a peashooter, but for the two or three times I have used it, it did not seem ineffective at all in close quarters. I suspect its damage model to be very similar to the other two available handguns, particularly the P08, with probably a 4HK for body shots at its maximum damage. I am aware that the C96 shoots a different calibre than the P08 of course, but from my feel for the weapon DICE probably gave it a very similar close range as well as long range damage.
On a side note, the M1911 Silencer used by the Tank Hunter Elite Class performs identical to a regular M1911, right? It has the same magazine capacity and seems to deal the same damage, though on the "Battlefield 1" Wikia it is listed as having a Suppressor.
